Sentimental Surf

The History of Sentimental Surf

The group Sentimental Surf was a rock band that got it's start in the small town of Grayling, Michigan. The band consisting of Andy V. (Vocals/Guitar/Drums/Bass/Backing Vocals), Joe C. (Bass/Backing Vocals/Vocals/Guitar), and Paul R. (Drums/Percussion/Vocals) all met collectively in grade school but did not form as a band until high school. When the band initially formed they began rehearsing cover music of the era's heavy metal, rock, and punk scene's. Soon they began incorporating these style's of music into their own original music. The band would conduct their rehearsals primarily out of any one of the member's garage's. Early on it was Andy's garage, then moving on to Paul's garage (made iconic by their song 'Paul's Garage'), and then later to Joe's garage where they even recorded album tracks. The band did not play live or have any official recordings for their first year. After their first year they did play some live gigs usually as a fill in or opening act. After the bands second year they had to go on hiatus due to Joe and Paul's military obligations. During the hiatus Andy continued writing material for the band. Joe came back for a short time during the hiatus to record the bands first album 'Summer 2000' which was recorded by Andy and the music performed by Joe and Andy doing all the parts in some capacity. Most of the lyrics and vocals were written and performed by Andy with some contributions from Joe. After the 'Summer 2000' recordings the band was back in hiatus and Andy continued the band with two other members Cy W. (Bass/Backing Vocals/Vocals) and Jason S. (Drums/Backing Vocals/Vocals). Later the same year of the 'Summer 2000' recording Andy had enough material to record another album. Most of the songs for the second album which would be 'Crowd Surf' were created with the new band members and a few were created with the original band. The album like the first was recorded by Andy. Paul was able to come back for a short time to record some of the albums songs drums. All other parts were performed by the new members respectively, with Andy. After the hiatus, the new members had left the band and Joe and Paul returned to their roles in full capacity back with Andy. From this point the band was still in Grayling. They began to play more gigs and and started headlining some shows as they tried to reach farther destinations with their music. They recorded an EP entitled 'Successful Disaster'. This was the only official music release the band did that was not recorded by Andy. Shortly after the EP was released several other songs were recorded independently for live show give aways and to contribute to other bands or compilation c.d.'s. From here the band moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. They performed many live shows during this time. They recorded and released their final album 'Paul's Garage' which was essentially some re-recordings of songs found on 'Crowd Surf', 'Summer 2000', and previously unreleased material. Soon after playing shows in support for the 'Paul's Garage' album, the band brought on Scott L. (Lead Guitar/Vocals/Guitar) as a permanent fourth member. The band would eventually change their name to One Less Future and founding member Andy would leave the band on good terms. This is where the history of Sentimental Surf ends.
